In this episode of The Build, we take you behind the scenes of commissioning a brand-new Phenom 34 before it heads to its new owner in Rhode Island. Shaun Reale joins Jim and Evin as they run through a full systems check, including Garmin electronics, Seakeeper Ride calibration, and high-speed performance trials in Charleston Harbor. From dockside inspections to on-the-water testing, see how Phenom Yachts ensures every boat is delivered in top condition.
When a brand-new Phenom 34 leaves the factory, it isn’t immediately ready to hit the water. Before delivery to its new owner, each boat undergoes a rigorous commissioning process to ensure every system is functioning at peak performance. In the latest episode of The Build, host Shaun Reale joins Jim and Evin as they take us through the step-by-step process of preparing a Phenom 34 for its new home in Rhode Island.
Commissioning is the final stage before a boat is handed off to its owner. It’s a comprehensive inspection that covers everything from mechanical systems and electronics to performance testing on the water. This ensures that the boat meets Phenom Yachts’ high standards and that any adjustments can be made before delivery.
Before even leaving the dock, Jim and Evin conduct a thorough inspection of the Phenom 34. They check all through-hull fittings, ensure seacock valves are open, and look for any potential leaks. The team also verifies that critical systems—such as lighting, electrical connections, and the Seakeeper Ride—are fully operational.
Next, the electronics get a full run-through. The Garmin multifunction displays (MFDs) are powered on, updated with the latest software, and tested for connectivity with external devices. The crew cycles through navigation lights, bilge pumps, freshwater systems, and radar functionality to confirm everything is in working order.
With all systems checked, it’s time to take the boat out on the water. As the Phenom 34 pulls away from the dock, the team keeps a close eye on how the Seakeeper Ride is performing, ensuring smooth operation.
Throughout the test run, Jim and Evin systematically work through their checklist:
• Verifying that the Garmin radar is spinning and displaying properly.
• Testing sonar readings, including depth, temperature, and speed.
• Checking joystick functionality and ensuring the boat responds as expected.
• Listening for proper bilge pump activation, including the high-water alarm.
Once these systems are confirmed, it's time to test the boats performance and maneuverability. The team runs the boat at different speeds, executes tight turns, and gathers key data such as fuel economy and top speed. Every detail matters to ensure that the Phenom 34 delivers the signature smooth ride and handling that Phenom Yachts is known for.
After returning to the dock, the team compiles a small punch list of final tweaks to address before the boat is shipped to its new owner. The commissioning process is all about attention to detail—catching anything that might need adjusting before the customer takes the helm.
With everything checked and the boat performing flawlessly, this Phenom 34 is just about ready to make its way to Rhode Island.
